FAQs

Q:  What is a Team tournament?
A:  It is a chess tournament where one team of 4 players, arranged in ratings order, sits down across from another team of 4 players in ratings order to play a match. Each team's board 1 will essay a game against each other.  Then each team's board two will play a game against each other, ...

Q:  Can a team have more than 4 players?
A:  Yes, each team is allowed one alternate; however, only 4 out of the 5 players can play at a time.

Q:  What if our team has only 3 members?
A:Then your team ranks your 3 players from top to bottom and plays against the top 3 players from another team; however, the other team wins the fourth board game by forfeit (hey, your team is missing a player) which counts as one team point for them.

Q: What if one or more of our team members comes late to the match?
A:  If your normal team lineup is ABCD and player B is late for the match your team cannot wait for player B and must play boards 1-3 with the team lineup of ACD while forfeiting on the fourth, or last, board. Your team cannot leave any boards empty except those at the end.  All of your top boards must be filled and cannot be left empty.

Q:  How does a team win a match?
A: The scores of the individual team member's games, for each team, are added together and compared with the total of the team they played a match with.  The team with highest total point score wins the match.  So if Team Tim has four players, whose individual scores are Board 1= Win, Board 2 = Draw, Board 3 = Win, and board 4 = Loss, then Team Tim's total score is 1 + .5 + 1 + 0 = 2.5.

Q:  How do I know what color to play?
A: When the team pairings are posted the team is assigned a "color" to play.  The top board plays that color and the rest of the team alternates with that board.  So, if Tims's Team is assigned Black then board 1 plays black, board two plays white, board three plays black, and board four plays white.

Q: What if I don't have a team?
A: We can put you together with other players that don't have a team and form one for you.

Q: Why do we need a team captain?
A:  The captain is responsible for making sure the team shows up, the board order is correct, advising team members how a board result affects the team score, and (among other things) reporting the match results.

Q:  What is the captains role in advising players about their game results?
A:  The captain can advise a team member on how a board result will affect the total team score but the captain can not assess the position on the board when giving out this advice.
